Description
Summary:碩士 === 東海大學 === 社會學系 === 95 === In the common concept of “Culture”, night and nocturnal life had hardly been treated as specific subjects in academic endeavours. Based on this fact, I try to explore the social meanings of the nocturnal by a different approach. In contrast of ordinary categorical divisions by daily time span, I suggest another interpretive strategy of light and artificial illumination. By dealing with the historical text of light and nocturnal life, I try to develop the term “Nightly Life” in contrast of “Daily Life”, explain the social meaning of the light as material and as space, and hence the theme of “Counter/ Negative Modernity”. This thesis would be an endeavour to provide a fundamental discourse for further systematic exploration of nocturnal social activities.
