Summary:碩士 === 台北巿立體育學院 === 運動科學研究所 === 95 === A Case Study on the Career Transition from An Outstanding Volleyball Player to Coach Abstract This case study explored the career process of Elf, a national volleyball player. The researcher was interested in his career development from 1993 to 2007 including stepping into volleyball arena, becoming a national player, then a coach after his retreating from military training in 2003. The case study used in-depth interviewing as the major way for data collection in order to elicit his feelings and experience in the career transition process. The study consisted of four participants, Elf, Elf’s coach, an employee at the volleyball association, and a volleyball player at a senior high school. Data collected contained eight interviewing transcriptions, five observation notes, related photos, and researcher’s journals. Narrative analysis was used for analyzing data. The trustworthiness of the study was carried out via long-term observations, peer examination, audit trail, and thick description. Elf, the case, was born in Ban-Chiao city and had twelve-year experience as a national volleyball player. After retreating from the military training, he was employed as a physical education teacher. In 2006, due to some unsuited behaviors in a match, Elf was banned to join games for two years. The results of the case study showed that Elf had a smooth career transition from a volleyball player to coach because he performed competently as a national player. However, he was inexperienced in conflict management during matches, so he encountered his first defeat in career. Finally, there were some suggestions for sports training: 1. Education beyond skills: to provide players not only with skills but also knowledge in relation to other fields. 2. Career planning: to educate good athletes with knowledge and skills in career planning. 3. Emotion management: to educate good athletes with emotion management.
