As a result, it is important to explore lead-free low-melting sealing/soldering glasses. Phosphate glasses have low viscosities, and thus are possible alternatives to lead glasses. The major shortcomings of phosphate glasses are their poor chemical durability, high thermal-expansion coefficient (CTE), and high crystallizbility. The main objective of the present study is to improve the properties of a low-viscosity 60SnO-10MgO-30P2O5 (mol%) glass by adding 0-6 mol% of B2O3 to the glass composition. It was found in the present study that the addition of B2O3 promoted the conversion of PO43- unit to BPO4 unit. The addition of B2O3 improved the chemical durability of the glass, suppressed the glass crystallizbility, while increased the glass viscosity. The CTE of the glass is in the range of 106 to 117 × 10-7 K-1, with the minimum value of 106 × 10-7 K-1 when the B2O3 content is 4 mol%. The addition of B2O3 increased the temperature range of sintering for the powders compacts. According to the present experimental results, adding appropriate amounts of B2O3 glass composition is benefit to the application potential of the SnO-MgO-P2O5 glasses.
