Ten background variables were studied. They were gender, school size, grade, parents’ attitude toward their children on surfing the Internet, their favorite thing to do when they surf the Internet, their experience of using Instant Messenger, the purpose of using Instant Messenger, hours spent on the Internet per day, days per week spent on the Internet and whether they chat with others actively. An survey “Instant Messenger Usage and Learning Attitude Questionnaire” was used to collect the data. Random sampling and cluster sampling were used. The subjects consisted of 1019 senior graders from elementary schools in Yunlin County. The main research results and findings were as follows: 1. Girls learning attitude were significantly better than boys’. 2. The learning attitudes of students from large and small size schools were significantly superior to students from middle size schools. 3. On the factor of parents’ attitude toward their children on surfing the Internet, students whose parents encourage them and guide them to surf the Internet had significantly better learning attitude than those whose parents forbid them or connive to surf the Internet. 4. The experience of using Instant Messenger didn’t have significant influence on learning attitude. 5. But,students who used Instant Messenger to contact their family members and for academic need had the best learning attitude. 6. About what elementary students like to do most on the Internet, the findings were as follows: (1) playing on-line games (2) using Instant Messenger (3) browsing the web (4) receiving and sending e-mail (5) searching information for academic reports (6) go on the chatting room. 7.
