However, domestic academic researches in this field are rare, especially in the relationship between translation methods and untranslatability. Discussions are mainly based on experiences. This research aims to know how dubbing translation industry does when encountering untranslatability in SL text in order to provide future practitioners references and stimulate domestic researches in this field. Based on Newmark’s translation criticism, the researcher took an American cartoon series, South Park, as the subject to see how the translator dealt with untranslatability in its source text with a comparison between the SL version and the TL version. Taking faithfulness, naturalness, expected effects and fluency as judging criteria for comparing different versions, the researcher finds that the most frequently applied methods are omission, changing for functional equivalence and even re-creation in place of faithful translation. Such rewriting approaches are used not only to avoid causing confusion due to the target audience’s lack of background knowledge, but also to create special effects exclusive in Taiwan’s dubbed version. It makes the dubbed South Park more than just a translated version of the original one. “Localization” and heavily adaptation of SP for eliminating untranslatability and other purposes make SP different to other dubbed audiovisual works in Taiwan. It is also a fact that SP is one of the well-dubbed works. Its translation strategies serve not only a reference but also provide a new orientation for future dubbing translation works.
