Certainly life in a city can be such an enormous and varied topic that it requires a dedicated site to present its memory in a way that is as organically coherent and comprehensive as possible. In my thesis I will describe and discuss issues in relation to setting up mechanisms that register and represent local memories to its present and future inhabitants. The first chapter defines the relationship between a city and its memory as topical of the studies of socio-geography and urban design. Memory contents and their perpetuation within the environment of the local culture itself are also discussed, with emphasis on mechanisms that operate them organically in the current climate of Taiwan’s culture. The next chapter continues the discussion by comparing such proposed mechanisms with existing institutions with a similar mission and capacity. For comparative purposes I have chosen to focus on Tainan, a city rich in cultural inheritances, to illustrate my argument that a systematic storage of a city’s memories comprise a superior option over what is currently available. The last chapter attempts a synthesis of theory and practice by projecting an imaginary transformation of the historical Lin’s Department Stores in Tainan into the city’s Memory Reserve. The system will include departments for exhibition, memory heritage preservation and the city’s image collection to convey such messages as an activation for the city’s past history and present cultural life through “experience” and “heritage preservation” 王德育 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 112 zh-TW
