碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 語言所 === 96 === This thesis attempts to explore semantics of laws of Taiwan, and to analyze the semantic differences between common citizens and legal professionals in reading the law. In this research, qualitative data is analyzed based on two linguistic theories, speech act theory and frame semantics. This study has identified some important differences between ordinary language and legal language in both lexicon and syntax. Furthermore, since legal language is based on legal frames, it is easy to be misunderstood by common citizens. This study thus hopes to be helpful to ordinary people in understanding legal language more accurately.
