First, in the chapter of the trial of mathematics, Alice encounters six trials of mathematics and I call them I) The Trial of Alice’s Fall, II) The Trials of Arithmetic—Addition and Multiplication, Division, and Subtraction, as well as III) The Trial of Rule Forty-Two. And from these trials, we see that both Alice’s abilities and attitudes, as time goes by, tend to grow from childishness to maturation when confronting these various mathematical trials in Wonderland. Second, in the chapter about the trial of time, Alice is confronted with six trials of time and they are labeled as I) The Temporal Trial in the Mad Hatter’s Dinner-time, II) The Temporal Trial in the Mad Hatter’s Tea-time, III) The Temporal Trial in the Mock Turtle’s Lesson on the Twelfth Day, IV) The Temporal Trial in the King’s Oldest Rule Forty-Two, V) The Temporal Trial in the Queen’s Verdict before a Solid Piece of Evidence, and VI) The Temporal Trial in the Queen’s “Sentence First—Verdict Afterwards.” And in these trials, we see that Alice’s abilities and attitudes, as time moves on,becomes more able and mature. Third, in my chapter about the trial of the Queen of Hearts, Alice undergoes six trials with the Queen and they are I) To Chop off Alice’s Head, II)To Chop off the Three Gardeners’ Heads, III)To Chop off the Cheshire Cat’s Head, IV)The Queen Overhears Alice Say that She doesn’t Like the Queen of Hearts at All, V) Based upon the White Rabbit’s False Accusation and the King’s Illogical Hypothesis, the Queen of Hearts Gives a Nonsensical Verdict, as well as VI) When the King of Hearts Asks the Jury to Consider Their Verdict, the Queen of Hearts Rejects the King’s Order and Demands “Sentence First—Verdict Afterwards.” And in these trials, we see that Alice maintains consistently excellent abilities, while her attitudes change from being strong to being mild, and last to being violent, when confronting these six trials from the arbitrary and tyrannical Queen of Hearts. Last but not least, I will compare and contrast Alice’s abilities and attitudes in these three trials of mathematics, of time and of the Queen of Hearts, and I will conclude that Alice’s abilities and attitudes in the trials of mathematics and of time happen to follow a similar course—that is, both her abilities and attitudes, as time goes on, tend to grow more mature—while her abilities and attitudes in thetrial of the Queen of Hearts take a very different one—that is, her abilities are uniformly superb whereas her attitudes vary from being strong, then to being mild, and lastly to violent. 碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 外國文學所 === 96 === In this thesis, I plan to interpret Alice’s adventures in Wonderland as
meaningful trials designed to test Alice’s abilities, and I work to discuss Alice's abilities in and attitudes toward three specific types of trials--the trial of mathematics, the trial of time, and the trial of the Queen of Hearts.
First, in the chapter of the trial of mathematics, Alice encounters six trials
of mathematics and I call them I) The Trial of Alice’s Fall, II) The Trials of
Arithmetic—Addition and Multiplication, Division, and Subtraction, as well as III) The Trial of Rule Forty-Two.
Third, in my chapter about the trial of the Queen of Hearts, Alice
undergoes six trials with the Queen and they are I) To Chop off Alice’s Head, II)To Chop off the Three Gardeners’ Heads, III)To Chop off the Cheshire Cat’s
Head, IV)The Queen Overhears Alice Say that She doesn’t Like the Queen of
Hearts at All, V) Based upon the White Rabbit’s False Accusation and the King’s Illogical Hypothesis, the Queen of Hearts Gives a Nonsensical Verdict, as well as VI) When the King of Hearts Asks the Jury to Consider Their Verdict, the Queen of Hearts Rejects the King’s Order and Demands “Sentence First—Verdict Afterwards.” And in these trials, we see that Alice maintains consistently excellent abilities, while her attitudes change from being strong to being mild, and last to being violent, when confronting these six trials from the arbitrary and tyrannical Queen of Hearts.
