However earthquakes are stochastic processes in nature, more records must be employed in the NRHA analysis, in order to improve the reliability of analysis results. Since the NRHA will incur the nonlinearity of the structures, simulations are more time consuming than that for linear response history analysis(LRHA). In this study, 3-bay steel frames are designed separately for both in near-fault region and far-distant region, compliant to the current Taiwan seismic codes. The frames are then analyzed in order to find the maximum inter-story drifts. For near-fault region, frames of 5, 10, and 18 stories, located near Che-Lung-Pu fault are designed and analyzed using 16 sets of Chi-Chi earthquake data, while for far-distant region, frame of 5, 10, and 18 stories are also designed and analyzed using 13 sets of earthquake data, separately for three different soil conditions-hard, medium and soft. The dispersions found for 3-bay frames are, in general, much less than those of single-bay frame structures. Therefore, using statistic values of and , obtined in single-bay frame study, to estimate the maximum inter-story drifts of multi-bay frame structures may obtain too conservative values, especially for frames in the near-fault region and that at the soft-soil sites in the far-fault region.
