The family is an important environment for the formation of personalities. In ancient and modern family teachings, “Yan Shi Jia Xun” is the first complete discourses on family education. Inside, moral education is an integral part of the concept of family education. The purpose of Zhitui’s book is to teach filial loyalty, prudent manners, build a reputation, and bring lasting honor to the family name.
The discourse first introduces the author’s social and political circumstances and also his family’s history and religion. In this way, it expounds the author’s life.
The style of writing in “Yan Shi Jia Xun” identifies theories through examples. The essay also focuses on connotation of virtue as related to morality by dividing into two parts, theories and examples. The author’s method of moral education is thus displayed.
Finally, the discourse’s use and wisdom in moral education at home is presented.
