University Students' Expectations of English Teachers' Immediacy Behaviors:A Study in Freshman English Classes

碩士 === 立德大學 === 應用英語研究所 === 96 === The central focus of this study is to examine non-English major students' expectations of instructors' communication behaviors and to explore the influence of teacher immediacy behaviors on male and female students' involvement in English learning.Moreover,this study also intends to provide a better understanding of teacher-student interaction in and out of the classroom and how communication serves to improve students' motivation and involvement in their English learning. This research took both quantitative and qualitative approach,including a self-report questionnaire and follow-up one on one interviews.Six intact classes of 223 university non-English major freshmen participated in the questionnaire study and 14 of them participated in the interview study.The quantitative analysis of the questionnaire was conducted through descriptive statistics and independent-sample t-test in order to investigate the students' general expectations and to determine the differences between male and female students' expectations on teacher immediacy.
