Meanwhile, China has risen dramatically and has become a significant economic power in recent years on account of its success in “open door” policy. Its enormous potential as a market attracts the attention of investors from Europe and U.S. However, EU and U.S. economic and trade policy toward China have plenty of differences in the way of conducting business. This study uses neo-realism as the research approach. First of all, this study describes the status quo of political and economic development in East Asia; afterward, it explores the contradictory relationship between EU and U.S. in competition and cooperation, which leads to their differences in policy and attitude toward China in terms of domestic factors and East Asia strategies. Finally, this study discusses the competition and cooperation of economy between EU and U.S. toward China in the structure of East Asia and evaluates economic achievements and future prospects on both their relationships with China. EU and U.S. compete in the building of regional integration in East Asia under their global strategies, and their relationship also appears more competitive than cooperative on WTO negotiations, trade, investment, and technology transfer due to similar export, import, and the investment industries within China. On the other hand, in order to promote the integration of China into the global economic system, EU and U.S. tend to cooperate with each other to solve the trade barriers in China. In a word, on the basis of gaining the maximum advantages, the economic and trade policy of EU and U.S. toward China is not only competitive but also cooperative.
