The systematic design process considers the integration of propeller design, hydrodynamics analysis, motor design/analysis and structure design. The design of the propeller employs the lifting line theory while that of the motor applies the magnetic circuit theory. Optimum design of the thruster can be achieved by iteration of the above two design algorithms. The finite element packages, Star-CD and ANSOFT Maxwell, are respectively used for simulation of hydrodynamics and electromagnetics for the thruster. Finally, a prototype is tested to verify the design.   The design target is listed as follows. The thruster can produce a thrust of 266N at 2000 rpm with an input voltage of 310 V and an inflow 2.06 m/s. The torque required for that condition is 13.9 N-m. According to the propeller design result, the motor with three phases, 16 poles, and 15 slots is designed to have a rated output power of 2.5kW to satisfy the torque and speed required for the propeller.   Overall, this thesis had successfully constructed an integrated design process for hubless rim-driven thrusters. The experiment has also verified the design.
