Generally, the dynamometer is the most common instrument used for measuring motor characteristics. However, it is inconvenient and time consuming to couple the motor shaft with the dynamometer especially for large power motors. When the motor shaft is not coaxial with the dynamometer, the measured results will be inaccurate. Therefore, this paper proposes a scheme based on accurate speed and acceleration for estimating the motor characteristics without a dynamometer, which is convenient and suitable for extreme size motor. The proposed testing system has two general parts: one is the standstill test to measure the motor resistance and inductance; the other is the driving test without and with a flywheel coupled respectively. In the driving test, the back-emf constant, viscosity and rotor inertia can be determined. The motor characteristics such as the torque-speed performance, the power-speed performance, the efficiency-speed performance, the steady speed-torque oscillation, the back-emf and the braking torque are also estimated in the driving test. The characteristics are determined based on the speed, the acceleration and the current information. Comparing the estimated characteristics with the results measured by using a dynamometer and a MEA motor testing system, the effectiveness of the presented testing procedure is verified.
