It was invented to solve inconvenience of carrying and taking care of keys. The purpose of this study is to synthesize mechanism design concepts of multi-step push-button locks based on a systematic approach. First of all, the classifications of mechanical locks are introduced, and the classifications, definition and development of mechanical push-button locks are described. Mechanical push-button locks can be classified into four types, including the one-step type, sequential type, repeatable type and multi-step type. The one-step, sequential, and repeatable push-button locks are further analyzed to conclude their structural characteristics as well as the design requirements and constraints of the multi-step push-button locks. Based on the Yan’s creative mechanism design methodology, the concepts and atlas of feasible designs are synthesized systematically. Two feasible mechanisms are further chosen for integral design.
