Summary: | 碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 輔導與諮商研究所 === 96 === Using non-participant field observation methods, this qualitative research study examines the problems faced by gay youth in five areas: as individuals, within the family, in schools, socially, and culturally. Taking three Singaporean gay youths as case studies, the study finds that social stigmatisation and sexual stereotyping impact gay youths' sexual identity. Unable to deal with the pressures brought on by these problems, these youths react with escapist behaviour, or by affecting an unconcerned facade, or with despondency and negativity. Teachers exhibiting coldness or discriminative behaviour towards homosexuals can also hurt gay youth; guidance counselling, on the other hand, can assist such students in coping with difficulties in sexual identification. Based on the problems faced by the three gay youths, this study also makes recommendations on helping gay youth build positive self identity, providing them with supportive environments in schools, and suggests policies the Ministry of Education in Singapore can adopt to help reduce pressure on gay youth.
