Frankia was isolated and inoculated onto roots of Taiwan coriaria seedlings. Five months later, the effects of Frankia on growth and physiological characteristics of seedlings were measured and analyzed. Also Taiwan coriaria were collected from field, extracted with methanol, and dissolved to water.The extracts were used to treat Taiwan red pine (Pinus taiwanensis Hay.) wood blocks or powders in order to carry out contact test for antitermitic activity. The results revealed that the net height growth, net root collar diameter growth, biomass, total leaf area, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll a+b concentrations, total content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, and transpiration rate of inoculated Taiwan coriaria seedlings were higher in inoculated seedlings than the non-inoculated ones. 30-day averaged mortality rates of Formosan termites (Captotermes formosanus Shirahi) fed on Taiwan red pine (Pinus taiwanensis Hay.) wood blocks treated with 4000 ppm methanolic extract of the roots, stems, and leaves of Taiwan coriaria were 75.7 ± 0.3 %,51.4 ± 1.5 %, and 56.4 ± 2.4 %, respectively, significantly higher than the control ones 9.3 ± 0.2 %. 30-day averaged mortality rates of Formosan termites fed on Taiwan red pine wood powder treated with 4000 ppm methanolic extract of the roots, stems, and leaves of Taiwan coriaria Taiwan coriaria were 100.0 ± 0 %, 65.0 ± 0.7 %, and 74.1 ± 1.6 %, respectively, significantly higher than the control ones 7.2 ± 0.1 %. The results of antitermitic activity test revealed that 30-day averaged mortality rates of Formosan termites fed on Taiwan red pine wood blocks treated with 4000 ppm Taiwan coriaria methanolic extract of immature flesh and seed of were 66.04 ± 5.82 %, 72.17 ± 4.45 %, significantly higher than that of mature flesh and seed (24.28 ± 4.78 % and 33.59 ± 4.05 %), and the control ones (7.40 ± 2.06 %), respectively.
