Asian financial crisis, external competition, deregulation and financial reforms brought an unprecedented impact to Taiwan’s banking system since 1990s. This study used non-structural Panzar–Rosse methodology to examine Taiwan’s market structure with monthly panel data over the period 1996 to 2007. The purpose of this study is to estimate the ‘H-statistic’ which represent market structure. Meanwhile, this research examined the impacts of individual event, factors and yearly changes on competition degrees in Taiwan’s banking system. The results indicated that Taiwan’s market structure is monopolistic competition except for 1999、2004 and 2007. Competition degree increased from 1996 to 2004. Subsequently, this paper examines effects of short accidents by monthly data that previous literatures did not test. Therefore, Asian financial crisis was not affect Taiwan’s financial system immediately. Restructuring, deregulation and financial reforms improved the competition degree.
