Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of art therapy on the social skills by elementary children with autism. The study proceeds in the way of taking the multiple probe design across behaviors of single-subject experimental design. The three participants with autism are placed in a resource room of an elementary school in Taichung city. The independent variable is art therapy. The dependent variable is the social skills of the three participants, including the scores of “basic communication”, “making friends” and “cooperation with others”.
There are three units of the art therapy according to social skills. The art therapy of each unit is implemented five times, for a total of fifteen times. The experimental design has three treatment phases-the baseline, the experimental instruction phase and the retention phase. The data collected is analyzed by using graphic display and visual analysis as well as descriptive statistic. The consequences of this study are as follows:
1. All of the three tested subjects have significantly higher examination scores during intervention phase than baselines.
2. During the retention phase, all of the three subjects maintain their examination scores as intervention phase.
3. Teachers and parents of the three tested subjects confirm that art therapy program can improve the social skills of the children with autism.
4. Teachers and parents of the three tested subjects all support the art therapy program and have agreement that after the art therapy involvement, students’ social skills have the enhancement.
Suggestions for education, art therapy and futher research are given based on the results above.
