By comparison, there are relatively few studies on the expression in paintings by geriatrics. However, if we look at social trends today, following the improvement in medicine and biotechnology the average human lifespan has increased substantially. The population structure has been gradually aging and we’ve already entered the society of the elderly. Thus, studies and topics revolving around geriatrics have also steadily expanded. Most of these studies stop at social welfare, medical care and other all comprehensive government policies. Even though the elderly do not form the core of our society, they still play a vital undeniable part in its development. And when this particular group reveals itself via painting, these artistic and learning expressions become object of our study. This study investigates special traits exhibited in paintings by the elderly and presents a case study based on an individual perspective. The study concentrates on the creative processes and artistic expression of the painting, while reflecting over its implications on cultural and art education. Analysis of the creative processes and artistic expression can reveal what roles they play in the entire chronological development of the painting expression. For example, important questions to be asked include when did the study case start painting? Why paint? Why select a particular content? Why paint in such a style? What’s the background story? The entire interview process is recorded, categorized and analyzed. After studying associated literature, this study goes beyond the analysis of the creative processes and artistic expression to investigate possible relevance with cultural and art education today. This study’s conclusion can be divided into three directions: 1. The paintings by Grandma Liu-Yueh display remarkable similarity with children’s drawings. However, despite the similarities, they cannot be viewed in the same light. It is recommended that theories for similar painting expressions for 65 and older are developed and categorized. These theory categories on homogenous groups can further be analyzed and used as reference for future studies. 2. For humans to approach and create art is as natural as can be. Life and art can be interwoven into one, until art is life. Art and life are unquestionably linked to one another. Building a comprehensive social art education system for the elderly and allowing them to indulge themselves in the pleasures of art will undoubtedly relieve social problems brought about by aging and expand the content of art education. 3. The effective promotion of social art education can create a social structure where art permeates on every level. This will benefit everyone by creating a space for their self, where one can stay undisturbed and peace of mind can be attained. This inner peace can translate into outer beauty. This creation of beauty can directly or indirectly percolate into every niche or ladder in society, purifying our spirits. This will aid in soothing and eliminating violence in our society while creating a serene beautiful one in its stead. 羅美蘭 2008 學位論文 ; thesis 139 zh-TW
