Each year, 15% of the mild cognitive impairment residents will turn into dementia, and memory impairment is usually viewed as one of the main symptoms of MCI. Thus, improving memory and cognitive function has been gradually paid attention to in international studies. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of memory training intervention on elderly residents with MCI. Two steps were designed. First of all, a memory training intervention program was developed. Later, the one-group pre-post test design was adopted to assess the effectiveness of the proposed program. Using purposive sampling, 5 elderly residents in nursing homes were selected to receive a 60-minute training program on a weekly basis for 13 consecutive weeks. Effectiveness of the program was evaluated before and after the intervention in the aspects of memory, attention, depression, and life satisfaction. The results indicated that intervention of memory training has significant effect on the subjects’ short-term memory and verbal expression. Attention, depression, and life satisfaction are non-significantly affected after the intervention, but the increase of the score for life satisfaction and decrease of the total score for depression are observed after the intervention. The results of this preliminary study were subject to a small sample size and 13 weeks of intervention. Besides, no control group was available for comparison in this study. However, the findings of this study can still be a reference for future studies on the feasibility and benefits of memory training intervention in senile MCI residents.
