The training needs of new nurses in medical wards were also examined. The convenience sample included nurses who had worked for one year or less at hospitals Department of Health. Quantitative and Qualitative data were obtained from structural questionnaires. Out of 118 questionnaires issued, 115 copies were collected(62 from new nurses and 53 from ward supervisors), a validity rate of 97.46%. The two measurement tools in the study were the Nursing Practicing Situation Handling Confidence Scale(NPSHC Scale) and the Nursing Practicing Competencies Mastery Scale(NPCM Scale). Two scales of eight sub-scales for Cronbach's α between .935~.990 and .936~.982;construct validity was examined by modified Delphi Technique. Descripitive statistical analysis ,t test , one-way ANOVA , Pearson r and multiple regression were performed using SPSS for Windows 15.0. The data analysis revealed the following five conclusions:(1)The averages (±std.d eviation) of eight categories of nursing practicing situation handling confidence of new nurses who had worked in medical wards for less than one year(0~10)were 6.85(±1.74),6.26(±1.72),6.97(±1.77),6.05(±1.93),5.80(±1.61),5.29(±1.78),5.97(±1.65),6.31(±1.95);the averages(±std.deviation) of eight categories of nursing practicing competency mastery(1~4)were 3.27(±0.58),2.96(±0.59),3.20(±0.52),3.18(±0.62),2.92(±0.60),2.76(±0.73),3.17(±0.65),3.08(±0.61).(2)In eight categories of nursing practicing situation handling confidence and nursing practicing competency mastery of three groups of nurses who had worked for less than one year, the group who had worked for 6~12 months had better performance than the other two groups.(3)Individual factors(working months, nursing practicing competencies mastery) and organizational factor (support from supervisors) explained 33.5% of the deviation in confidence of nurses in handling nursing practicing situations.Nursing practicing competencies mastery was an important influential factor in nursing practicing situation handling confidence.(4)In the eight categories of nursing practicing situations handling confidence, training needs of new nurses increased with the number of working months;67 items for new nurses who had worked for 3~6 months and 71 items for new nurses who had worked for 6~12 months.(5)Nursing practicing competence mastery of the eight categories, self-assessment values of new nurses who had worked for less than 3 months were higher than the expected values of nurses in charge of wards;training needs gap between new nurses who had worked for 3~6 months and 6~12 months are below 1, 45 items for new nurses who had worked for 3~6 months and 135 items for new nurses who had worked for 6~12 months. Results of this study provide a valuable reference for incorporation in future nursing school curricula for employment training and clinical places when designing orientation training and continuing education courses for new nurses who had worked in medical wards.
