Thus, the main purpose of this study is using an existing three-dimensional model, Princeton Ocean Model (POM), to simulate tides and tide-induced residual currents around Taiwan. The model was established with high-resolution grids and realistic coastal geometry. The bottom topography is obtained from TaiDBMV6 of NCOR, NSC. For the open boundary conditions, the sea level heights are derived from the NAO99b dataset. The model result indicates that tidal waves propagate from the Pacific toward Taiwan. When tides move near Taiwan, they divide into two parts that enter both ends of the Taiwan Strait. Generally, the tidal amplitude in the west of Taiwan is much greater than that in the east of Taiwan due to the variation of bottom topography and the region narrowed down by the two lateral boundaries over the strait. The largest amplitude occurs in the middle of the strait. Besides, the largest tidal currents are found in the north of Taiwan, Taiwan Bank and the Peng-Hu Channel. The tide-induced residual current is caused by the interaction among the barotropic tide, the bottom relief and the coastal geometry. The model shows that the relatively large residual currents are basically disturbed in two regions: (1) the north of Taiwan and (2) the region between Luzon Strait and Taiwan Bank.
