However, it is worth noting that if the efficiency of the shipside operation in terminals could not be improved simultaneously, the benefits from container ships size uprising may be offset due to the longer berthing time consumed by the large vessels. To enhance the efficiency of the shipside operation, a suitable model of the yard operation plays a critical role. In practice, there are many factors that affecting the selection of the yard operation model. For example, some terminals prefer to use transfer cranes to secure huge storage capacity but some like to use straddle carriers for their high mobility. The aim of this study is to identify those critical factors which are used as criteria for selecting a suitable model by means of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) for a newly-built terminal in the port of Kaohsiung. In this study, the capacity, efficiency, cost, safety and environment protection are identified as five critical factors for selecting yard operation models, and the rail mounted gantry crane (RMG) is proved to be the most suitable operation model for the case study of Kaohsiung port.
