The tools include file analysis, the survey of questionnaire, the records of classroom observation, the English grades of College Entrance Examination Center, the examination results of freshmen’s English test, the recording material, the interviewing records, and the error analysis of class test and the oral test. The study findings are briefly stated below: 1. There is the disscord between the view of English learning and the actual English performance of Our maritime freshmen:There 48.3%students think that English is important, and 31.0%students think English is very important;there are 37.9%students expect their English ability can satisfied with future occupation ,and there are also 34.5%students want their English ability can like the MTL people; however, there are 55.2% not so satisfied with their own English ability , and 31.0% students don’t feel satisfied. Besides, the multiple materials also all demonstrated student's English ability is not good enough in each way. So, we can see that the students really have the psychological conflict with the view of English and in English ability performance. 2. The English ability of our maritime freshmen still has to be improved: After the multiple material examinations were discovered that the maritime freshmen’s English ability is on the primary level of maritime English; however, they still have some problems in spelling words or the understanding in reading,so their English ability still has to be improved. 3. The English learning weakness of our maritime freshmen are "vocabulary" and "grammar": according to the questionnaire, there are 37.9% students express "agreed”, and 17.2% students express "strongly agreed" with” the most difficult part of leaning English is vocabulary”; besides, there are 44.8% students "agreed" with “grammar is very difficult”, 34.5% students also "strongly agreed" with it. From the interviewing and the test also discovers the student think these two parts are the most weakness of learning English. 4. The general English in maritime context is helpful to the freshmen to link up the maritime ESP: according to the variety materials, when they accept this kind of course, the student's English ability is simply satisfied with the primary maritime English index 1 to 4, and they also start to have the basic knowledge of maritime professional vocabularies and the simple aspects. From this the discovery, The general English in maritime context is helpful to the professional courses and can link the maritime ESP.
