This study is to function as a bridge between the theory of investigating the talent and education according to Liu Shao’s Ren Wu Zh人物志. The book, Ren Wu Zh, has three volumes and twelve chapters. Based on the method of bian ming xi li辨名析理(which means to detect the essence of objects by research on the structure of words or signs), the author deeply analyzes the issues such as talent and nature, and points out three conceptions of zh質, xing性, and xing形. In the chapter of “Jiu Zheng九徵,” “There is no exception that those who with flesh and body are founded on the essence of qi元一. Qi can be divided into good and evil so that different people have different bodies or temperaments凡有血氣者,莫不含元一以為質,稟陰陽以立性,體五行而著形.” Thus, humans’ aptitude can be detected through the external body and form. The purpose of this book is to jian xing ding ming檢形定名 and liang neng er shou guan量能而授官. The content is made of two parts. One is concerned about examining people such as the chapters of “Jiu Zheng九徵,” “Ba Guan八觀,” “Qi Miu七繆,” and “Xiao Nan效難.” The other is involved in appreciating people such as the chapters of “Cai Neng材能,” and “Li Hai利害.”
Personality is determined by the inner nature and the inner nature is shown through human body and form, complexion, the style of speech and behaviors. Liu Shao’s Ren Wu Zh人物志 discusses the relation of humans’ appearance, mind, and complexion, through which the inner nature can be investigated by observing body and form as well as complexion. Examining and appreciating people is a recondite study and hard to be judged objectively. There is a saying that “appearance is produced by mind, and appearance is transformed by mind相由心生,相隨心轉.” Even so, we still can completely investigate humans’ talent from appearance to inside, from subtlety to the important points. Therefore, this study attempts to apply the method of examining and appreciating people to education from the perspective of the rules of observing people of the Chinese tradition.
