Questionnaire survey was employed in this study. The participants in the study were kindergarten children’s subjects (in four-year and five-year groups, N=1094) in Taipei county. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, discriminate analysis, chi-square test. According to the result, four kinds of maternal parenting styles were concluded. Based on these four maternal parenting styles, semi-interviews were inducted to four subjects to investigate the relationship between different maternal parenting styles and children’s autonomy. After analyzing and discussing of the result, the conclusions and findings were as follows: 1. Authoritative parenting style took the most percentage (72%); permissive parenting style took the second place (18%); authoritarian parenting style took 7%, and rejecting and neglectful parenting style took 3%. 2. Differences were significant on the relationship between children’s genders and maternal parenting styles. 3. Maternal parenting styles had significance with maters’ age, education levels, family income per year, family styles, caring hours, working hours, age of mature, rank of siblings and ethnic groups. 4. Differences were significant on different maternal discipline styles and children’s autonomy: (1) Children’s “functional autonomy” of authoritarian parenting style was better than “interactive autonomy”. (2) Children’s “functional autonomy” and “interactive autonomy” of authoritative parenting style showed consistently positive development. (3) Children’s “interactive autonomy” of Permissive parenting style was better than “functional autonomy”. (4) To Rejecting and Neglectful parenting style, children in daily life of “functional autonomy” were independent, yet lack the ability of cleaning and casting; they also showed backwardness and lack confidence in “interactive autonomy”. (5) The differences of “interactive autonomy” in children’s autonomy were from the “responsiveness” in maternal parenting styles, not “demandingness”. (6) The differences of “functional autonomy” in children’s autonomy were from “demandingness” in maternal parenting styles, not “responsiveness”. (7) High responsiveness and high demandingness in authoritative parenting were the most appropriate way to develop children’s “functional autonomy” and “interactive autonomy”. Finally, suggestions, which regard to children’s main caretakers, teachers and future studies, were provided according to the results. Li tsung-wen Kou 郭李宗文 2008 學位論文 ; thesis 185 zh-TW
