碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒童文學研究所 === 98 === Leo Lionni (1910~1999) is a very famous and representative author in contemporary picture book territory. The picture books created by Leo Lionni are not only loved deeply by universal readers, but used in the teaching site. In this research, I tried to treat the characteristics of Leo Lionni’s picture books from his background and procedure of creation. This research mainly applied with textual analysis and selected twenty five picture books created by Leo Lionni as research samples. Furthermore, to conclude the collected data of relative literacy and treat in induction and integration approach. The first chapter explains the origin and purpose of this research. The second chapter introduces Leo Lionni’s growing background, procedure of creation and brief introduction of his works. The third chapter analyzes the material, layout and arrangement of pictures and texts of Leo Lionni’s picture books in image analysis. The fourth chapter analyses the story of Leo Lionni’s picture books in the aspects of the fable and implied meaning. The fifth chapter makes conclusion and the relative suggestions. The research discovery:First, Leo Lionni is good at using fable style to imply the theme in the plot. The whole content is warm and positive and the literary form is chastened and poetic.Second, the style of collage and rubbing pictures and the reduction of texts present a deep thinking space to the readers.Third, thinking the individual value and the relationship between individual and group by using clear and simple expression. Leo Lionni hadn’t created the picture books until forty-nine years old. Therefore, he took materials from the memories and experiences closed to the plain life and instilled rich emotion and social observation at the same time. Thus, his works can make readers feel a warm, simple and poignant power toward reading.
