As a consequence, there was a dubious distinction in the tectonic relationship between the load-bearing structure and the enclosing envelope. Thus the external form of buildings failed to display self-explicitness. Recently, however, the tectonic thinking of local Taiwan architects has been reflected progressively in their selection of material and engineering methods. In particular, for safety and rapidity, steel construction has been increasingly used in the architectural works of this generation, which demonstrates contextualism tectonic thinking, as well as consideration of locality. In the perspective of tectonics, an investigation concerning the detailing of exposed joints in steel constructions becomes an important issue. To investigate the localization of tectonics, this study focuses on the Taiwan architect Shi-Zong Yeh, who in recent years has frequently incorporated steel construction in his works, and uses Yeh’s Nan-Ying Green City in Tainan County in 2005 for the case study. Adopting Gottfried Semper’s ‘cladding theory’ and the technical development of steel construction engineering as an analytical framework, we focus on the relationship between the load-bearing structure, the enclosing envelope, and the intermediate jointing, based on the frame system and skin system concepts of cladding theory. In our analysis, we examined three aspects: materials, components, and jointing methods, to gain an understanding of the developmental possibilities as well as the limitations of constructional technique in Taiwan steel constructions. In terms of detailed joints, engineering methods, and tectonic thinking, this study concludes and offers the following three suggestions: 1.The designer should take into consideration both aesthetic and technical factors for the detailing of components, such that details of local-style steel construction display originality and the characteristics of the locality. 2.Steel construction consultants should systematically develop components for steel constructions, such that the local-style tectonic culture could achieve the delicacy of industrial design. 3.Tectonic thinking in local-style steel construction should integrate the advantages of industrialization and craftsmanship, faithfully presenting the structural characteristics of steel construction, such that the designer’s intention could be better reflected in the formal significance of the architecture.
