The results can be used to predict and control the settlement of tunnel during excavation in the future. This study uses Plaxis 8.6, a plane strain finite element program, with the stress reduction method, to simulate the three-dimensional behavior of tunnel excavation. Compared with the in-situ measurement data, a reasonable simulation method is established. It is found from this study that range of the tunnel deformation induced by excavation is about 2.5 times tunnel diameter from the excavation face. A minimum of 2.0 m between the bench and invert excavation faces should be maintained to ensure the safety of tunnels during construction. It is found from the numerical analysis that the main settlement happened during tunnel heading excavation, which accounts for about 85% of the total settlement.
