The effects of various precursors, solution concentrations, heat-treatments and dopant amounts on the structure, crystallinity, microstructure and photoluminescent properties were investigated. Metal salts and metal organic compounds were used as precursors and various dopants as well as doping amounts were added. The gels showed cloudy for metal salt precursors, while transparent sols and gels could be obtained by controlling the proper concentrations of water and acidic electrolyte from alkoxide precursors. The dopant amounts could influence the gelation time remarkably. All dried gels began to form ZnAl2O4 structure after heating at 600˚C, and the crystallinity as well as grain size increased with heating temperature. The average grain sizes were about 15 ~ 35 nm after firing at 600~1200 ˚C. However, dopant amounts did not remarkably affect the crystallinity of gels. The specific surface areas of gel powders were 97.5~52.2 m2/g after firing at 600~1000˚C, and they decreased as heating temperature increasing. The peak wavelengths of the green and red emission located at 510 nm and 650~720 nm for Mn-doped and Cr-doped gels, respectively. Both emissions could be observed at the same time for co-doped with Mn and Cr.
