Explaining the consciousness of actors and viewers is an achievement of rational consciousness, with rationalist interaction between the two giving conscious expression to the virtual events unfolding onstage. With no practical result and events portrayed differing completely from events in the actual world, actors are able to, within virtual hidden space, to create an image in the mind of sensitive viewers that is rich in content and realizes conscious interaction between actors and viewers. From the perspectives of actor consciousness and viewer consciousness, this paper demonstrates the relationship between viewers and performers in the drama “Tang Xi Nong”. From historical information incorporated in this drama, we can understand that palace actors in the Tang Dynasty court used humor and political satire in their performances. Political satire was employed to admonish those in positions of power, help rectify government policies and better conditions for the people. Performances were delivered to select audiences and if viewers were unaware of the purpose of a performance, the significance of such would be lost. Thus, viewers lacking “viewer consciousness” would have been unable to appreciate the relationship between the virtual roles being portrayed and the actors performing onstage, leading to those using their authority to restrict or lash out against such performances.
