Many studies have been done on the relationship between phonological awareness and reading; moreover, most of the participants in the previous study are local native children in Taiwan. However, comparatively little research focuses on the development of the phonological awareness of Vietnamese foreign spouse’s children in the kindergarten in Taiwan. The purpose of the study aims to investigate phonological awareness of Vietnamese foreign spouse’s children and try to make a comparison with that of local native children in Taiwan. The study further explores whether participants whose language use at home is a crucial factor in influencing their Chinese phonological awareness. Four Chinese phonological awareness tasks were given to seventy six participants who study in the kindergarten. They include thirty eight local native children and thirty eight Vietnamese foreign spouse’s children. The results of the study provide information about the participants’ Chinese phonological awareness in terms of onset, rime, the complex rime, and tone. In addition, the findings also revealed that the performance of local native children were superior to Vietnamese foreign spouse’s children, and participants’ language use at home influenced on their Chinese phonological awareness, especially for the Vietnamese foreign spouse’s children. Some pedagogical implications and suggestions for teachers in the kindergarten deriving from the findings are also provided. Kwock-Ping Tse 謝國平 2008/01/ 學位論文 ; thesis 127 en_US
