Programme music is one of the important features of The Romantic Music, Liszt is the faithful advocate of Programme music. The compose of “Année de Pèlerinage” take fourty-five years, he wrote a musical autobiography in this programmatic piano work.
This dissertation includes five chapters:
Chapter 1: Talk about the Liszt’s life and the characteristic of the composing in each period.
Chapter 2: Mentions to the compositional situations of “Année de Pèlerinage” and the differences from the other piano works.
Chapter 3: Refers to the history and the aesthetics of Programme music, and find out the conception about programmatic music of Liszt.
Chapter 4: Divides into four categories: Naturalism, Religion (Diabolical, Death, Divine), Romantic Hero and Love, Poeticize. Discuss extra-musical associations of these 23 compositions in “Année de Pèlerinage”.
Chapter 5: An approach to analysis the themes, for instance: The Tritone, The Cross Motive, The Cruciform Cross Motive, Figurations…etc., to find out the symbolic significances and the programmatic musical narrative of Liszt in this work.
