Description
Summary:碩士 === 樹德科技大學 === 建築與古蹟維護研究所 === 96 === The temples are earthly residencies of gods and local religions centers. The beauty of the traditional temples in Taiwan is enriched in their architectural ornamentation. Moreover, the ornamentation is also the display of the artistry and skills of the craftmen. In addition, architectural ornamentation can be employed to attract good luck and prevent misfortune, and to educate the offspring. This thesis uses the theme of 24 Filial Duties from Hsinchu County Beipu Cihtian Temple, Taoyuan County Longtan Yungfu Temple and Taoyang County Dashi Furen Temple as study subjects. In the thesis, the origins of the 24 Filial Duties and their relations to Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism will be researched. The employment of the stories of 24 Filial Duties as an ornamental theme in the temples is also studied to illustrate the religious and educational function of the temples. The conclusions of this thesis are: 1. The theme of 24 Filial Duties are shaped by ethical conduct of filial piety and then embedded in religious beliefs. 2. The varied applications of 24 Filial Duties in temple ornamentation are determined by the characteristics of each temple. 3. The layouts of the theme of 24 Filial Duties on the eave-pillars are different because of the modifications to the original drafts of master workers. 4. The management of temples should pay extra attention to the lessening number of craftsmen of traditional temple ornamentation and its effect on the preservation of the histories of temples.
