description 碩士 === 東海大學 === 中國文學系 === 96 === Shijing (The Book of Odes / The Classic of Poems and Songs) is the oldest overall anthology of poetry and songs and the reason why it is being spread and handed down during the thousand of years rather than forgot or ceased is not only because it has the musicality and feature of easily to be sung by people, but also mainly because of that it has the moving power which derives from the emotions and thoughts conveyed by the characters of the book and from the patterns built up by their personal characteristics. Therefore, we can say: “The figures in Shijing are the souls of the poems.” And to explore the forming of the male figures’ images may represent the Zhou Dynasty’s unique politics, history and the culture connotation. According to that, Chapter One of the study is the Introduction, stating the motivation and purpose of the study; the definition towards the male figures’ image meaning and this study’s range; the frame and methods of the study. Chapter Two is the analysis on the images of certain single figures in Shijing, taking the legendary figures, historical figures and typical figures as the targets of the study, mostly from the text of this book, and adding the related data collected from the four classifications of books of ancient China- classics (jing), history (shi), philosophy (tzi), literary books(Ji), with a view to having a more complete presentation of those figures’ images and thus highlighting the feature of each figure’s image. Chapter Three is the survey of the images of figures of proper nouns in Shijing. Here picks up “the Mr. Jee” (彼其之子, the word “其” is here pronounced the same as Jee-a last name (姬) )”who is often the targets of being satirized by the poets, and the “Juin Tze (君子), a person with noble characters and integrity” who is favored by the poets, in order to study their images respectively. Chapter Four is on the “pictures” (meaning proper statements) of various groups of people in Shijing. This chapter chooses four kinds of pictures that appear the most characteristics of Zhou Dynasty in the fields of politics, history and culture dimensions- “ the pictures about the emperor’s meeting vassals”(王會諸侯圖) “the pictures about field hunting ” (田獵圖) “ the pictures about offering sacrifices to gods/ worshipping”(祭祀圖) “ the pictures about feasts and dips”(宴飲圖), and also examines how poets edit and cut the content of these verses, how to describe the processes, shape the roles, arrange the settings and build up the atmospheres and so on toward the picturing on the varied groups of people. Chapter Five is about the role-shaping skills on the male figures’ images, ranging from the outside description, inside description, the environments’ serving as contrasts, or the atmospheres’ building-ups to other shaping skills…etc, which are used for the illustrations. Chapter six is the exploration on Zhou dynasty’s politics, culture connotation and the value of its literature data reflected from the male figures’ images in Shijing. Chapter seven addresses what the writer has learned and concluded based on the studies of various kinds of the male figures’ images in Shijing. To sum up what the above has mentioned, through the studies on the male figures images in Shijing, we not only are able to understand Shijing about its different types of the male figures’ images, but also able to learn the image-shaping skills applied to the male figures’ images, the Zhou people’s destiny outlook/ the outlook of worship to gods/destiny, the outstanding leadership philosophy, leadership strategies and the beliefs of people-first during this period from this book. We also find that in Shijing the Zhou dynasty’s culture connotation displayed from the male figures’ images is one which takes virtues or morals (“de”) as the norms and codes of conducts that aristocracy should hold, one which takes rites and courtesies (“ li”) as its core value, peace and harmony as the highest limit of the Zhou culture. Besides, the literature datum’s value of Shijing is also an aspect that can’t be born to be ignored and whether the literature data are accepted or not and the interpretation problems are worthy of being emphasized by the scholars. Keywords: 《Shijing》, male, the figures’ images, the person called Mr. Ji/Jee; that Mr. Ji/Jee, Jun Zi ( a person of noble character and integrity), Field Hunting poems, poems about offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors/worshiping poems/ Feast and Drink poems
