Description
Summary:碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 心理與諮商學系碩士班 === 96 === The purpose of the study was to explore the process of how an art therapy works on a college student with low self-esteem. The result of the study was presented in the following three aspects. First, the process of the art therapy was represented in order of time. Next, the effect on the client was analyzed based on the interaction in the triangle relationship, established between the art therapist, the client and the artwork. Finally, the study was to look into the change process of the client’s self-esteem. The study primarily adopts the method of qualitive analysis, with some help of quantitive analysis. The recordings between the client and the therapist in the art therapy, the client’s artwork, and the client’s interview with the researcher were collected to analyze. The researcher is the counselor in the art therapy. The subjective is a freshman college student with low self-esteem. The subjective received a 60-minute art therapy once a week, lasting for 14 sessions in total. The effects of the art therapy on the client’s self-esteem were examined with pre-test and post-test. The qualitive assessment is by means of the painting evaluation tool designed and defined by the researcher: the client’s sense of self and the clients’ sense of self in others’ eyes. The quantitive assessment tool is the SLCS-R. The process analysis was based on these data: the recordings of the therapeutic process, the client’s artworks, and the counselor’s reflection journals. The main findings of the study were as follows: 1. According to the process dynamics and the evaluation of the client’s needs, the intervention of a painting improvisation in each session helped the client get access to his own awareness of low self-esteem, and then led to set the clear goal of the therapy. 2. From the pre-test and post-test, the result found that the art therapy improved the client’s low self-esteem. The therapeutic effects on the changes of self-esteem were found in the triangle relationship established between the art therapist, the client and the artwork. With the help of art-making and the artwork, the client became more aware of himself and others. Moreover, the art therapist came to conceptualize the client’s problems and formulated a treatment plan in the art-making process, which also helped build the therapeutic relationship. The interactions in the triangle relationship were the factors to raise the client’s self-esteem. 3. The causes of the client’s low self-esteem mainly came from the past unhealthy, unstable and insecure family system, the negative peer relationship, all of which built the negative self-image and feelings of being unloved. Art making and artworks helped the client experience the sense of ability and increased the good feelings about himself; therefore, the negative self-esteem was gradually transformed to positive self-esteem. The change process was presented in the client’s relationship with himself, peer group and his family and also in client’s art-making performances. These above factors formulated the process of the change process of the client’s self-esteem. From what has been stated above, the researcher provided self reflections and suggestions for the future study.
