These two works illustrate Zhuo Zheng Yuan, the private garden owned by Wang Xian-chen as the official of the Ming Dynasty. They refer to “Zhuo Zheng Yuan poetry and painting collection of Wen Heng Shan” in 1533 and “Zhuo Zheng Yuan drawing” in 1551. These two pieces are the creations accomplished by Wen Zheng Ming after 60 years old. Besides, in the creations of traditional literati painting, the literati’s description on the hermitages has lasted for long. By the Ming Dynasty, the illustration of gardens has become more popular. Therefore, according to Wen Zheng-ming’s two pieces of work, this paper attempts to find out if Wen Zheng- ming in the 16th century constructed the characteristics of the Ming Dynasty on the development of garden landscape painting. The first chapter introduces the motives of this study. The second chapter describes the time background of Wen Zheng-ming to probe into the relation between him and the subjects of illustration Zhuo Zheng Yuan. The third chapter generalizes the development of traditional hermit landscape and highlights the characteristics of garden landscape painting in the 16th century upon the review of the styles in the past. The fourth chapter analyzes “Zhuo Zheng Yuan poetry and painting collection of Wen Heng Shan” created at 64 years old and observes the form and style of this work and the artistic thought reflected by the creator at the stage. The fifth chapter focuses on “Zhuo Zheng Yuan drawing” created at 82 years old and analyzes his motive of the past style. It is also compared with the works in the early time and reorganizes the transformation of the styles in the former and later stages. The sixth chapter generalizes the individual characteristics and time position of Wen Zheng-ming’s garden landscape painting.
