A famous Taiwanese poet, Lin Heng-tai, once said, “Chen Hsu-ku is the illuminati of Taiwan culture and Taiwan nationalist movement during Japanese occupied period.” The first chapter of the thesis is the introduction. In order to have further understanding of Chen Hsu-ku’s action and contribution to Taiwan society and culture during Japanese occupied period, and its influence on his literary writing, the second chapter presents the broad outline of Chen Hsu-ku’s life from five aspects: family background, academia, social participation, cultural participation, and his friendship. The third chapter is the analysis of Chen Hsu-ku’s writing process and his point of view toward literature. Chen Hsu-ku’s writing process is divided by stages to understand the process of the transition: from traditional literature to new literature, and then from new literature back to traditional literature. In chapter four, six hundred and forty-seven Chinese poems are generalized so that the subject matter in Chen Hsu-ku’s Chinese poems can be clearly exhibited. Moreover, a new turning point was seen to be implanted into classical poetry by the addition of new words, new phrases, and new thoughts in the traditional forms of peotic writing. In chapter five, the researcher affirmed Chen Hsu-ku’s importance in Taiwan new literature by probing into the subject matter of his new poems, novels, and essays. Chapter six is the conclusion of Chen Hsu-ku’s contribution and status in the history of Taiwan literature and Taiwan nationalist movement during Japanese occupied period.
