Subsequently, experiments and comparison of simulated results and experimental data will be done. For this study, the street-lighting composed of the LEDs has a rated power of 100 W. Factors affecting the LED junctions and effective reduction of the total volume and weight for the street-lighting will be discussed. The design criterion for the street-lighting LEDs is based on the SSL (Solid-State Lighting) associated with the Energy Star@ Program issued by Department of Energy, United States of America, and the national standard on “Street-Lighting Light-Emitting Diodes” recently issued by the Republic of China. The life-span demanded by the outdoor lighting devices is required to be over 35,000 hours. This study compared the numerically simulated results with those obtained from experimental data and discussed the feasibility and reliability for the thermal design using Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology – ICEPAK. In addition, this study dealt with the design of the configuration of the shell of the lighting device with the hope that the resulting temperature obtained would meet the required specifications demanded by the lighting devices. Results obtained by this study indicated that good agreement was achieved by the computer simulated results and those obtained from the experimental data for the street-lighting modules used for this study; the difference between the two sets of results is within 9% using the experimental data as the bases for comparison. In addition, results obtained from the experiments indicated that the design of the configuration of the shell used for the lighting device met the goal of an operating life of three years with L70% for the street-lighting. It was demonstrated that preliminary evaluation could be done by using the thermo-fluidic simulation software package – ICEPAK. By doing so, reduction in time for design and for manufacturing prototype would be effectively done, with added benefit of improved quality of the design. Furthermore, the experimental results obtained in this study could be used for the bases for design references of future LED and other related street-lighting thermal management designs.
