The subject liquid crystals were prepard in a short two-step reaction. First, (6-alkoxynaphthalen-2-yl)magnesium bromides were added to N-phrnyloxycarbonyl-6-methylquinoline, affording a dihydroquinoline, which was then oxidized by o-chloranil. The resulting products, 2-(6-alkoxynaphthalen-2-yl)-6-methylquinolines, were obtained in good yield (50%~60%).
