The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of music therapy on psychological problems, physiologic problems and quality of life in chronic ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: The patients were randomized into two groups: one group received 60 minutes of relaxing music by using headphones and another group received 60 minutes of uninterrupted rest. We recorded the changes of psychology, physiology and quality of life before the intervention and immediately after intervention. Results: Twenty alert, chronic ventilator-dependent patients were recruited. Ten patients enrolled to each experimental group and control group. In experimental group, stress scores, depression scores, Chinese health scores, blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, and cortisol level decreased significantly (P<0.05) after intervention. In control group, blood pressure and Chinese health scores decreased significantly (P<0.05). The subjects detected a significant difference in the heart rate between groups (P<0.05). Discussion and suggestions: The chronic ventilator-dependent patients had high scores of distress and depression. Their quality of life was poor. Music therapy is an effective intervention in improving physiologic problems and quality of life. After study, the most patients (8/10) in experimental group wanted to listen the music. Uninterrupted music listening is encouraged if the patients desire. Further studies may assess the effectiveness of music therapy on the ventilator-dependent patients who have a history of dementia, loss of consciousness.
