Since many varieties of chemicals are used in the production processes for high-tech industries in Southern Taiwan Science Park. Because of these industries located in Southern Taiwan Science Park, pollution becomes localize, and it may cause large impacts on environmental and people near-by. The main purposes of this study are (1) to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by using passive samplers, (2) to identify sources and emission patterns of VOCs in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, and (3) to assess the effects and impacts of VOC emissions on the near-by environment and people. This study’s results show lower VOC concentrations and smaller variations in comparison with those of other studies. Total VOCs concentrations range from 1.09 to 58.8ppb. VOC concentration and contributions are correlated well with solvent usage in the processes, traffic volume, and point sources such as wastewater treatment plant. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene are commonly present in exhaust gas of trucks and cars. Some specific pollutants, such as n-butyl acetate, sporadically exist in the Southern Taiwan Science Park. These results indicate VOC concentrations are related with the source activities. Although VOC concentrations are low, some halogenated VOCs show higher potential hazard. The emission minimization of these chemicals should be the first priority. Our findings can be a reference for assessing levels of the air pollutants and further understand the relationship between exposure of air pollutants and health risk assessment among residents in Southern Taiwan Science Park.
