Most families now include aged and elderly people for whom there are mobility problems. Though the elderly can perform simple tasks for themselves in daily life, they still require the care of dedicated caretakers in order to prevent dangerous accidents in the home, such as falls or losing consciousness. Consequently, elderly health care needs are becoming increasingly important in Taiwanese society. Due to considerations of privacy, domestic financial limitations, and complicated procedures for employment of foreign caretakers, care of the elderly is generally performed by their spouses (or daughters and daughters-in-law). This situation leads to caretakers bearing significant and heavy responsibilities. To relieve such pressure on caretakers, this study designs an alert device for use in elderly care using RFID temperature sensing functions. This study introduces RFID technologies to monitor the abnormal temperatures of elderly persons living at home, we use middleware, alarm sounds, and cellular phone functions to construct a system for care of elderly persons living at home. In situations such as those in which the elderly fall, require assistance, or even when caretakers leave the home for short periods of time for leisure purposes, caretakers can be notified in real-time through this system. Caretakers need only to define dangerous maximum and minimum temperatures and set three sets of emergency telephone numbers. These features are aimed to increase system versatility and improve caretaking quality, thereby relieving physical and emotional pressure on caretakers.
