More and more people nowadays use wireless local area networks, so the issue how to enhance the performance of wireless local area network becomes more important than before. The standard for wireless LAN did not give any definition at the Access Point (AP) selection; most stations select to connection with AP at present only base on Receiving Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) without considering the AP load. It makes the load unbalance problem between APs in the network, the heavy load AP is congestion whereas the bandwidth resource of light load is wastage. The performance of wireless local area network is not fully utilized. In order to improve the performance of wireless local area network, there are many load balancing mechanisms were proposed such as Yutaka [5] to respond the pressure and performance dropped because of user growing. This thesis subject is to get the load level of AP in IEEE802.11 wireless local area network in order to provide the load-balancing mechanism. The thesis proposed a novel AP load estimation (APLE) mechanism; it firstly classifies the STAs under the AP according to the data amount in transmitting queue; the stations will be divided into three classes: Idle STA, Pulse STA, and Active STA. After the classification and calculating the AP load, the heavy load AP has to look for the light load APs through backhaul network to switch its load for load balance. From the simulation results, the Fairness Index of APLE is better than that of 802.11 and SSM. Wen-Shyang Hwang 黃文祥 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 63 zh-TW
