sustainable development actively under the mainstream of global environmental
protection consciousness. Among these issues, three major directives of environmental
protection that promoted by European Union (EU) is the best example; which include
waste electronics and electrical equipment (WEEE), restriction of hazardous substance
(RoHS), and directive of eco-design requirement of energy-using products (EuP). Hence,
the eco-design which integrates the environmental aspects into product design is the
effective approach to improve the environmental performance of the products. In the
above-mentioned directives, The EuP is set up to establish the framework of eco-design
of environmental that focuses on energy-using products. Furthermore, EuP is also set up
to gather and quantify the relative environmental protection characters of products into
the eco-profile. This eco-profile can increase the competitiveness of the products. This
study takes router as an example and focuses on the router life cycle (Cradle-to-Gate).
Life cycle inventory (LCI) is employed to assess the environmental performance ofrouter, and then set up the program of improvement. From the bill of material (BOM) of
router, the key suppliers can be selected. According the results of examination and
inference on the products and the spare parts of the key suppliers which weight are more
than 80%, it reveals that the PC material is the main material among the input of router
during the production stage. Considering the environmental impact by the whole life
cycle of objective product, it shows that the three impact indicators; total energy, the
total amount of greenhouse gases and waste; have the relative large number. Finally,
following the information of eco-profile, the feasibility and benefit evaluation of
eco-design can be discussed for further step.
