This is not only due to their close geographic locations but also because of their common interests in the Chinese culture expressed in the Chinese written characters. Historically, Taiwan was once a colony of Japan. At that time many Japanese domestic vogue words were brought into Taiwan in no time and became instantly popular. After the defeat of Japan in World War II (WWII), Taiwan was returned back to Kuomintang (KMT). Japanese spoken language has been banned in a public place ever since. The ban remained effective until 1987 when the martial law was lifted. In late 1990 Japan-addict became a fashion. All these above events have impact on the exchange of Japanese vogue words between Japan and Taiwan. This article investigates the usage statistics of the Japanese vogue words in Taiwanese dictionaries, newspapers, and magazines during the period of 1946 to 1989, and explores the quantity and the circulation rate of these vogue words after WWII. We also study the characteristics of vogue words that would or would not prevail in Taiwan and the temporariness of these words. We refer to a paper written by Wang published in 2008 about an investigation on the usage of Japanese vogue words in Taiwan before WWII and make a comparison between the prewar and postwar usages.
