In this research, two types of conditional access mechanisms for direct broadcast system and IPTV system are developed. Moreover, a DRM mechanism is designed for large-scale distribution of copyrighted digital content in P2P network. Conditional access is the access control mechanism used for pay-TV service. It should control the transmitted programs can be just accessed by the authorized subscribers. Thus, the service provider can charge their subscribers and any illegal access can be prevented. The conditional access of direct broadcast system for subscribers who live in multi-dwelling units, such as large apartment buildings, should be flexible in dynamic management of subscribers. The design of key distribution and transport are suitable for the three-level key hierarchies of a pay-TV system. The keys can be efficiently and securely distributed to the authorized subscribers. Only simple operations are required in our design, it will be applicable to resource-limited set-top-box and smartcard. A significant problem in providing IPTV services is its high deployment and maintenance cost. In addition, the capacity of the video servers can quickly become a bottleneck. One solution to alleviate the load on servers is to use peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. During broadcast, P2P can transmit video contents through active or automatic mutual transfer between user ends, thus avoiding network congestion when all contents are transmitted from one or a few servers. The conditional access mechanism for protecting the copyright in P2P IPTV service should enable large-scale distribution of copyrighted video using P2P streaming technology. And the security and efficiency of IPTV service can be guaranteed. Bit-Torrent is the most popular peer-to-peer software because of its efficiency for distributing files. However, Bit-Torrent file sharing is infamous for copyright infringement, making the establishment of rights management technologies an urgent need. In this research, a Digital Rights Management (DRM) mechanism is proposed to protect the copyright in Bit-Torrent. It will be a novel business model of DRM system. It enables large-scale distribution of copyrighted digital content in P2P network. Anyone can be the content provider to distribute his creation efficiently and securely.
