Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 外國語文學系碩博士班 === 97 === The Sun Also Rises, a novel that reflects the atmosphere of the Lost Generation in Europe is about a man’s love story in a decadent age. Within the novel, readers can find that Jake travels from one place to another while his mood also changes with it. It is noticeable that places play vital role in the protagonist’s story, each of which has its particular meaning for Jake. With the change of places, Jake encounters different people and incidents, which enable him to become more mature and realize what his standing is. Therefore, Jake’s journey seemingly constitutes the form of this novel. Moreover, there is a certain pattern in his journey if we carefully observe the arrangement of places: Jake’s journey begins from Paris, Burguete, Pamplona, San Sebastian, to Madrid. Accordingly, we can know that Jake’s journey is continuously to and fro between the crowded city and the country. In this thesis, I would attempt to argue that the form of this novel is Jake’s self-seeking journey in which there are two circular routes and several circle images. In Chapter One, I would discuss the first circular route from Paris to Burguete, in which Jake experiences suffering and despair in waste land like city because of his impossible relationship with Brett and recovers from the peaceful healing nature. With his return to a crowded town Pamplona where the fiesta takes place, the first circular route is ended. In Chapter Two, the second circular route would be discussed, which consists of the second leg of Pamplona where Jake feels like hell again and San Sebastian where Jake retreats to retrieve his serenity and to get rebirth. Chapter Three will deal with the condition that how Jake practices his new code when he is summoned by Brett who suffers from losing her lover at Madrid, representing a new beginning of a cycle. Except the two circular routes in the plot, there are other circle images or repetitions, which can echo the theme of this novel, such us the merry-go-round that involves most of characters and the usage of repeated words, descriptions, all of which could be seen as the form of this novel as well.
