This thesis work compared Classical Chinese textbooks in the scope of the textbook comparison and the content analysis with an emphasis on the arrangement of form and content in each textbook. Textbooks serves not only the main instrument for Chinese teaching, but are also constructed for specific instructional requirements in each language environment. Thus three Classical Chinese textbooks are selected as research material which are “Literary Chinese for Advanced Beginners” , “Gudai Hanyu” and “Classical Chinese-A Basic Reader” – in the framework of the Chinese environment and the non-Chinese environment in the university educational system. After the educational objectives, content arrangement, vocabulary, grammar and the exercises in these textbooks were examined, we found that no matter under the Chinese or non-Chinese teaching environment , the emphasis of classical Chinese teaching focused on literary grammar and functional words, so are the exercises designed to reinforce the memory of grammar usage. In addition to the ancient Chinese cultural content arranged in textbook, only “Gudai Hanyu” selected such teaching material in the form close to Classical Chinese textbooks for native speakers. Finally, although there is a view of learning Classical Chinese to enhance CFL/CFSL learners’ modern Chinese fluency as mentioned in the preface of “Literary Chinese for Advanced Beginners” and “Classical Chinese-A Basic Reader”, the structure of the corresponding textbooks did not reflect such an objective.
